Gourmet Food – When you want to indulge yourself
Posted Tuesday, February 07, 2006 5:02:10 PM by Kate Grant

What's the connection between fresh black truffles from France, smoked salmon, caviar, foie gras, wines, oils, and ooh, I can go on forever... Except for the fact that they taste so good, they are all gourmet foods.

If you wish to buy gourmet food products, there are special gourmet food stores, that will cater to all you needs. I remember the first time I entered Fauchon in Paris, one of the most famous gourmet shops in the world. There you'll find Chocolate and sweets, coffee and tea, preserves, cookies and biscuits and many more gourmet food gifts, including gourmet food baskets for any occasion. Fauchon is now an international gourmet food retailer, with a branch in New York.

If you can't get to a gourmet food shop near where you live, you can always do your shopping online. Many shops will offer you the best gourmet foods. Some are specializing in one type of food or drink, like coffee or tea, others offer any kind of gourmet food you like, from all over the world.

It's festival time in California's wine country, in case you needed a reason to visit. No, not just another celebration of the grape; this is the Napa Valley Mustard Festival, which places a little more emphasis on the region's food excellence. It's early for grape vines to take center stage, but the festival Web site -- http://mustardfestival.org -- says mustard blooms will soon be covering the fields and hills. Look for "Click here for your invitation" to learn about the cultural and culinary events in this elegant winter celebration, such as gourmet dinners, wine tastings and dances. There are plenty of other things to see and do. Click on "Places to Go" at the Chamber of Commerce -- www.napachamber.dpway.com -- for a basic overview of galleries, shopping, hiking, bicycling and golf....

Wine stops flowing at Fowler's gourmet downtown
Posted Friday, December 01, 2006 12:58:17 PM by Blog57 Team
DURHAM -- The wine has officially stopped flowing at Fowler's Food and Wine, the 81-year-old gourmet grocery that was one of the early draws for the Brightleaf Square area of downtown Durham. The owners of the South Duke Street business had planned to reopen the store today after being closed since Nov. 5, but it didn't work, said William Simpson, who owns Fowler's with Fred Whaley as G3 Market Co. "We're tired and for us to do it we needed to put more money into it and that wasn't what was good for the partners, so it's just time to sell," Simpson said. "It's not something we knew was going to happen but it's best for us, Fowler's and the community." Simpson said he and Whaley are talking with three different potential buyers, two who want to keep the business close to what it is now. "They're all local, so we're excited about it," said Simpson....

Exec Dining: Making the basket case for gourmet gift giving

The market for gift baskets is brimming with possibilities. Baskets are the ideal corporate gift giving item, suitable for myriad occasions when you want to offer your gratitude in a thoughtful, personal way, even to people you don't know extremely well. While there are many national gift basket firms who ship across the country, when it comes to delicate foodstuffs such as cheeses, chocolates, wine or fruit, it makes better sense to choose a local firm to ensure a basket spends as little time in transit as possible. In the Ottawa area, there are many purveyors of gift baskets loaded with unique, appetizing gourmet food products. Aside from being one of the city's finest delicatessens and the source of delicious hand-rolled, bagels, Ottawa Bagelshop Catering & Fine Foods is one such local firm offering a wide range of gift baskets suited for any taste and budget....

A feast of films awaits
Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 10:58:49 PM by Blog57 Team
Previewing a film festival before it opens is akin to sitting down to a lonely gourmet meal. No companions to share the delights. The chef, the wait staff, nowhere to be found. You're blindfolded, have a cold, and - deepest insult to grievous injury - there's no wine. OK, the sensual deprivation is not that drastic. But far-ranging, thoughtfully programmed, well-attended festivals such as the Starz Denver Film Festival are meant to be rich experiences where what's on screen is vital but only a beginning. Denver's biggest film feast opens Thursday night at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House with Anthony Minghella's drama "Breaking and Entering," starring Jude Law, Juliette Binoche and Robin Wright Penn. The Academy Award-winning director of "The English Patient," as well as "Cold Mountain" and "The Talented Mr....

Gourmet eateries to offer discounts

For two weeks in November, Hudson Valley restaurants will offer patrons discounted gourmet meals in exchange for the chance to showcase the region as a premier culinary destination. Between Nov. 6-10 and Nov. 13-17, restaurants in seven counties will offer three-course dinners for $26 and three-course lunches for $16. There are about 70 participating restaurants, including 21 from Dutchess County and 12 from Ulster County. Here's how it works: People decide where they want to eat from a list available at www.hudsonvalleyrestaurantweek.com. Reservations are not required but recommended. People arrive during one of the designated weekdays and are given a special menu, where they'll have a few options to chose from. For example, Via Nove's dinner menu includes fried calamari, Arancini or mushroom and mozzarella timbale for appetizers; Sicilian rigatoni, stuffed pork loin or chicken Valdostana for entrees; and cannoli, chocolate creme brulee or New York cheesecake for dessert....

Craig LaBan Explores Halloween Dining in Phila.
Posted Monday, October 30, 2006 3:03:25 PM by Blog57 Team
As we approach Halloween, area chefs are putting out some scary foods on local menus -- as one local food critic puts it -- 'putting the gore in gourmet.' The dictionary defines the word, 'o-f-f-a-l,' as parts of a butchered animal that are considered inedible by human beings. But, Philadelphia Inquirer restaurant critic Craig LaBan says they're not awful, they're delicious: "Everything from organ meats, to veal cheeks, to eyeball tacos." Some are newer upscale restaurants, some are old standbys, and others are ethnic eateries, where chefs are looking backwards and re-defining old recipes: "A lot of the great culinary traditions have their roots in rustic, country cooking. Nothing was ever wasted." LaBan says these 'spare parts chefs' are serving both a crowd of immigrants -- both recent and not so recent -- as well as the adventure dining crowd, looking for the next interesting experience....

Noisy Antonio's delivers tasty, top-notch food
Posted Friday, October 27, 2006 10:58:42 AM by Blog57 Team
Great food, friendly, professional service and a delightful vintage setting should be enough to make Antonio's Ristorante one of the local restaurants I want to return to as often as I can. But noise on a recent Friday evening made conversation all but impossible. Other diners apparently thought so, too, and their solution was to try to shout above the noise. The handsome old green tin ceiling and black and white tile floor did nothing to mute the revelry of happy diners celebrating the end of the work week. But Antonio's never missed a beat when it came to hospitality and courtesy or hot food that was loaded with flavor and tasted made-to-order. The extensive menu is long on seafood, offering it in 12 of its 14 antipasti ($6.95 to $12.95)....
