The testimony was prepared by Marcia Merry Baker, EIR Economics Editor. Dear Chairman Charles B. Rangel, and other Honorable Members of the Committee: We fully support your opening of the work of the 110th Congress, by holding a hearing series on the economic conditions of the United States; and in that spirit, we respond bluntly to your questions for this third hearing?on how to identify the "successes" of globalization and improve its "benefits"?by stressing this one central point: Globalization has been a raving success for those financial interests who imposed it over the past 40 years; and a disaster?as they intended?for the nations and peoples that are being looted.... | |

| | | Second Committee in agreement on need for more financial, Moral ... | | Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 12:57:42 PM by Blog57 Team | | The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) agreed, during today's discussion on training and research, that the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and United Nations University (UNU) had achieved commendable success during the latest review period, despite their modest budgets, and deserved further financial and moral support from the United Nations community. Marcel A. Boisard, Executive Director of UNITAR, who was on hand to introduce the Institute's latest report, told the Committee that the large increase in the number of training programmes offered by the Institute at the time of the last biennial review was remarkable considering its small staff of around 100 people, who worked with a relatively small budget of $20 million. In the current biennium, UNITAR -- with offices both in New York, and Hiroshima -- hoped to increase its funds by 15 per cent to $25 million, much of it coming from voluntary contributions by Member States.... | |

| | | Zambia: Concerns Mount Over World Heritage Site Status | | Posted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 10:57:36 PM by Blog57 Team | | Zambia's only listed World Heritage Site is under threat by plans to build a multi-million dollar resort near the world-renowned Victoria Falls, a local environmental organisation is claiming. The government has awarded 220 hectares of land in the 66 sq.km Mosi-O-Tunya National Park at a cost of US$9 million, plus an undisclosed recurring levy, to South Africa's Legacy Group Holdings for development over a 75-year period under a tourism concession programme. The national park is a World Heritage Site shared with neighbouring Zimbabwe, with the waterfalls as an international tourist drawcard. In the past, Zimbabwe was the main port of call for those wanting to visit Victoria Falls, but Zambia has become the preferred destination as a consequence of Zimbabwe's economic meltdown, which has seen annual inflation levels topping 1,000 percent - the highest in the world - with commonplace shortages of fuel, energy and food.... | |

The World Food Program is already working to re-establish the rail network and Wednesday sent a train carrying 600 metric tons of aid on a 1,500 kilometer journey from the city of Lubumbashi to the Congo River port of Kindu for the first time in several years, WFP country director Charles Vincent said. "An air bridge to Kindu costs us $1,000 a ton, the train will probably cost us five times less," he told reporters.
