When you enter the grand tasting room (a grand room, indeed) of Mohegan Sun's Sun Winefest '07, you start by grabbing a wine glass. How you fill that glass, and what you eat to accompany the staggering array of wine, spirits and beer is up to you. The state's largest wine and food show - which is becoming one of the premier wine and culinary events on the East Coast - offers so much that you couldn't possibly take it all in over the course of its two days (Saturday and Sunday). It's part of what makes Sun Winefest so daunting. And so exciting. ....

| | | Completely obsessed with food | | Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 11:09:39 AM by Blog57 Team | | You Probably think that because I'm writing a food column, I'm obsessed with eating. Well, you would be wrong, my friends. I'm obsessed with everything associated with food. Going to a farmers market can be an out-of-body experience for me. Just walking among those beautiful products of nature is an inspiration. I have to control myself or I'll end up with 20 bags of produce that beg to be turned into appetizers and salads, main dishes and side dishes and. . . ummm yum, desserts. In addition to farmers markets, I'm absolutely addicted to ethnic markets. I've been known to bring home products that are a total mystery to me. I have no idea what they are, let alone how to prepare them. Thank God for the Internet. I have spent many hours Googling food names, trying to figure out what to do with them.... | |

Following a diplomatic row with Georgia over the September arrest of four Russian officers in Tbilisi on espionage charges, Russian authorities cracked down on businesses thought to be related to the ethnic Georgian mafia in Russia. As a result, at least three large casinos in Moscow were shut down, and scores of illegal immigrants from the South Caucasus state were deported. The move caused a wave of criticism from Georgia and international human rights advocates. "I cannot approve of selective actions on ethnic grounds," Putin said, answering a question on measures against Georgian criminal groups in Russia....

| | | Sodexho says outside catering available | | Posted Tuesday, October 24, 2006 12:55:54 PM by Blog57 Team | | Beginning in March of this year, student groups wishing to hold catered events were limited to using Sodexho, Portland State's food service provider. Concerns about students' inability to contract outside catering services have continued, but Sodexho employees say students have had few problems securing outside services. For catered events through Sodexho, the university asks for one week's notice, although Sodexho said that they have been able to respond to requests with less notice. If a student group wants catering from an outside vendor, the group must give a two-week notice. Student groups must also fill out an outside vendor waiver form, stating how they intend to cater their event. “Some groups are supported by donations from local vendors like Hot Lips or Baja Fresh.... | |
