Some food for thought about dog food
Posted Monday, February 06, 2006 12:16:54 PM by Kate Grant

What does your dog like to eat? Imagine a restaurant, where you can take your pet, and the waiter will give you your menu, and then ask "and what would your dog like to eat?"Dog food

I'm sure dog food companies would love to contribute to a place such as this, that will offer the best dog food you can imagine: Innova Dog food, Pedigree Dog food, Purina Dog food, Merrick Dog food, Iams Dog food, Abady Dog Food and Canidae dog food.

If your dog likes a savory dish, savory dishes changing daily will be served, all from the dog food recipe cook book...

Well, today it might sound a little far fetched, but just give it time, and it wouldn't look so bizarre. We recently heard about a German dog food manufacturer, that wanted to donate hundreds of tons of dog food to starving countries in Africa.

The owner was shown on TV, spreading dog food on a slice of bread, sprinkling some special spices on top, and here you have it, a dog food sandwich... Needless to say, those African countries were hurt deaply. It's easy for some people to forget sometimes that these are human beings.

Mad cow breakthrough announced

WASHINGTON - Scientists said Sunday that they have used genetic engineering techniques to produce the first cattle that may be biologically incapable of getting mad cow disease. The animals, which lack a gene that is crucial to the disease's progression, were not designed for use as food. They were created so that human pharmaceuticals can be made in their blood without the danger that those products might get contaminated with the infectious agent that causes mad cow. That agent, a protein known as a prion (pronounced PREE-on), can cause a fatal human ailment, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, if it gets into the body. Possibilities: More generally, scientists said, the animals will facilitate studies of prions, which are among the strangest of all known infectious agents because they do not contain any genetic material....

PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Four generations ago, as the Loy family history goes, Brigham Young asked Bill Loy Jr.'s great-grandfather to harvest fish from Utah Lake to feed pioneers whose crops had been eaten by locusts.Today, Loy is involved in another important project: getting rid of Utah Lake's carp.Loy, a commercial fisherman, is helping the June Sucker Recovery Implementation Program, sponsored by Utah's Department of Natural Resources, by catching carp in large quantities and selling them. The fish have overpopulated, muddying the lake and killing other species of more desirable fish and aquatic plants. "(Carp) has a bad name," Loy said. "It's a bony fish."Still, Loy sends regular shipments of carp to Israel, Canada and Los Angeles, among other places. One restaurant in Omaha, Neb., makes a specialty sandwich out of Utah Lake carp, with hundreds of people regularly waiting in line to sample the food, Loy said. But with the fish's bad name and a declining market, the carp are becoming harder to sell....

SALT, PEPPER AND SMOKE-- The secret to great barbecue is letting meat smoke over subtle heat for a good, long time. For 'cue savant Rodney Muirhead, bringing a new restaurant to readiness was similarly drawn-out. As we reported on Oregonlive.com last week, after months spent renovating a 35-seat storefront, he opens his hotly anticipated Podnah's Pit Barbecue today on Northeast Prescott Street. Barbecue junkies, some of the most rabid and opinionated culinarians around, regard Muirhead as a serious pit master. He first surfaced in 2003 with Low BBQ --originally with pal Kyle Connally -- after the two were laid off by a robotics firm. Low gained a quick following at the Portland Farmers Market and then on Monday nights at Apizza Scholls on Southeast Hawthorne. The short run ended when other prospects called, and, in 2004, Muirhead sold the Low BBQ name, smoker and know-how to Ken's Place, where it's now featured on Tuesday nights (1852 S.E....

Taiwanese Investors Keen On Agriculture, Animal Husbandry In M'sia

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- Taiwanese investors still regard Malaysia as a good investment destination for expansion into the rest of Asean, which has a total population of 600 million people, says an official from the Taipei Investors Association in Malaysia. Its chairman, Datuk Dr Ting Chung Cheng, said Taiwan may be left out of Asean's trade picture once the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) came to full bloom. "Trade between ASEAN members and their dialogue partners will be intensified as a result of tax exemptions and products from Taiwan will find it difficult to penetrate the ASEAN market because of their relatively higher prices," he said in an interview with Bernama. Products which are not from ASEAN members and their dialogue partners are likely to attract a tax of about 20 per cent compared with lower tax levels enjoyed by members and dialogue partners....

He's bow-wowing out: Newport animal officer to retire after 33 years

Newport - James W. Peckham is an animal lover who has spent more than half his life working as the city's animal control officer. After a 33-year career, he plans to retire at the end of the month to enjoy life on his Portsmouth farm where he lives with a menagerie of dogs, cats, horses, chickens, rabbits and a homing pigeon."My animals are my hobby," said Peckham, who began working for the city on Sept. 18, 1973. "Back then, the job title was dog constable. For short, they use to call me D.C." The city recently had instituted a leash law requiring dog owners to keep their pets fenced, leashed or otherwise restrained. But there was no ticketing policy or other means of enforcement when Peckham was hired."There were dogs all over the streets," he said. "What they wanted from me was to clean the place up."Peckham drove around the city in a Newport Police Department van that was known as the "paddy wagon" before the days of political correctness....

Food experts exposed to medical technology

Surrounded by the sunset, views of Paradise Valley, lavish food and wine Friday night, a group of food experts gathered on the patio of a mountaintop home at the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain. "Did you know there's a restaurant in New Jersey that has a one-of-a-kind MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) type machine that screens the wine?" one of them asked. "You mean the MRIs they use for medical purposes?" replied Anthony Dias Blue. He's the spirits and wine editor for Bon Appetit magazine. Yes, the Crystal Springs Resort in Hardyston, N.J. (with a wine cellar of 50,000 bottles), has the machine, which screens a sealed bottle to see whether it has gone foul. The wine scanner uses nuclear magnetic resonance, the same technology used in MRI scans. ....

STORE UNLEASHES NEW FOOD SHELF
Posted Saturday, October 28, 2006 3:01:28 PM by Blog57 Team
Charity food-shelf donations at the Festival Foods store in Bloomington have been quite generous this week ? for pets. The store has launched what's believed to be the area's first food shelf for homeless pets, partnering with the Minnesota Valley Humane Society. Customers can buy $5 bags of animal products prepared by store staff and drop them off at an in-store donation shelf. Since Wednesday, customers have bought about 100 bags ? about twice the donations aimed at the store's food shelf for people, said Tom Clasen, director of operations for Vadnais Heights-based Knowlan's Super Markets, the store's owner. "We didn't know how this would be received," he said, acknowledging he was worried some people might see the food shelf as putting animals ahead of people....
